On September 14, 1994, the Digistar projector
at Abrams Planetarium was formally dedicated at a reception held in honor
of The Abrams Foundation Board who generously contributed $300,000 toward
its purchase during MSU 2000. Hosted by MSU President M. Peter McPherson,
special guests included Barbara Brown, Joe Foster and Thomas Schafer,
Board members of the Talbert and Leota Abrams Foundation.
Installed in 1993, the new projector is truly
a state-of-the-art piece of equipment making use of computers to plot
the stars, allowing the audience to view the night sky from practically
anywhere in our neighborhood of the galaxy. Dr. Frank Hoppensteadt, Dean
of the College of Natural Science presented Barbara Brown, President of
the Abrams Foundation Board, with a plaque commemorating the Foundation's
support for acquiring the Digistar.
It is estimated well over one million people
-- from preschoolers to senior citizens -- have glimpsed the universe
in our planetarium, since its original dedication in 1964.
